For You

Human brothers, sisters, everything is for you,
Everything.
Nights and days,
Daylight, moonlight.
Leaves in moonlight,
Their curiosity,
Their wisdom.
Thousands of greens in daylight,
For you, the yellows, the pinks.
The touch of skin on the palm of the hand,
Its warmth,
Its tenderness,
The comfort of lying down,
The hellos, all for you.
For you, the swaying masts in the port,
The names of days,
Months,
The paint of boats,
The postman’s footsteps,
The pitcher man’s hands.
The sweat running down brows,
The bullets spent on the front line,
For you, the graves, the gravestones,
The jails, handcuffs, executions
For you,
Everything is for you.

Orhan Veli (1914-1950). Sizin İçin. Translated from the Turkish.
