Tempted by learning, I went to the shore.
Ecstasy made me swoon; left me to drown.
In the middle of the sea, I sought help from learning;
It didn’t rescue me. About to be drowned by ecstasy,
It was ignorance that came to my rescue.

Baba Taher (born c. 1000, died after 1055). Translated from the Turkish.
