My Tree

In our street
If there were other trees
I wouldn’t love you so much.
But if you
Together with us
Could play kaydırak*
I would love you more.

My beautiful tree!
When you die,
I’m hoping home will be
In a different street.

Orhan Veli (1914-1950). Ağacım. Translated from the Turkish.

* A children’s game similar to hopscotch,
but played with the feet only.
