Epitaph

Nothing in the world made him suffer
As much as his corn.
Even having been created ugly,
Didn’t make him feel so sorry.
Although he didn’t remember God,
When his shoe didn’t rub,
He wasn’t really a sinner.
Poor Süleyman effendi,
What a pity.

Orhan Veli (1914-1950). Kitabe-i Sengi Mezar. Translated from the Turkish.
