Petition

I, too, am one of your sinful servants, my God…
The only prayer I know is “Kulhuvallah”*,
And I know to say “Thank You Lord” when I feel full.
I don’t fast even just for a day during Ramadan;
Yet I have suffered so much from love.
I, too, am one of your sinful servants, my God!…

You have many servants like me in the world, my God!…
If you didn’t know that, please know now.
Worry for daily bread, worry for love, made them forget you.
One doesn’t remember what one ate yesterday.
What do we eat worth remembering, anyway.
You have many servants like me in this world, my God!…

I hope you won’t be offended by what I write, my God!…
These things your angels wouldn’t tell you.
The world isn’t anymore quite like you created it;
People have meddled in everything.
Please, if you don’t like
What I write, don’t be offended, my God!…

There is something I will ask you, forgive me, my God!…
Many girls go to your mosques five times a day;
White maidens wearing white yashmaks…
My heart beats fast at first sight;
Haven’t you at all taken to any of them?
There is something I will ask you, forgive me, my God!…

This is how people are, my God!…
Just managing to make ends meet, stretching, all the way…
For us you are still the eternal mystery.
If you knew us, you would change…
Everyone’s sorrow is as great as their burden.
This is how people are, my God!…
